Disbarred Attorney Convicted of Fraud
Howard Thaler, 61, a disbarred New York Attorney was sentenced to seven years in prison and ordered to pay restitution of $523,000 in connection with his role in fraudulent real estate deals. He was also found guity by a federal jury in White Plains, New York, last year in connection with fraud and false statements relating to his procurement of numerous bank loans through fraudulent means and for deceiving individuals for whom he acted as their attorney even though he was already disbarred.
Salvatore LoBreglio, a former Westchester County Independence Party official and former New York City police officer, had previously been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to instructing a witness to lie to federal investigators in connection with the investigation.
In one of the deals included in the current sentencing, Thaler had a man impersonate a deceased man at a closing so that Thaler‘s client could purchase the property from the deceased individual.
According to The Journal-News, Thaler told the sentencing judge that he did not believe, at the time, that he was doing anything wrong. The judge apparently did not give much credence to Thaler’s assertions, stating:
“I find it hard to believe that a trained lawyer doesn’t know that you can’t lie to a lending institution and encourage your clients to do so.”
